Total Communication

What is Total Communication?

Total Communication is an approach that encompasses various methods and tools to support each child's unique communication needs. Total Communication includes speech, signing, gestures, written language, picture communication, and voice output communication devices.

For children with profound and multiple disabilities, communication might also include vocalizations, body movements, and eye movements. This approach ensures that every child's 'voice' is recognized and valued, enabling a truly inclusive school environment.

At Cedars School, we are dedicated to creating a Total Communication environment. This means responding to the needs of individual children and using a combination of methods and approaches to support effective communication.

Benefits of Total Communication

How We Implement Total Communication

Implementing a Total Communication approach at Cedars School ensures that all children, regardless of their communication abilities, can access learning and interact with their peers and teachers. This approach values and respects all forms of communication, promoting inclusivity and understanding within our school community.

Intensive Interaction

We use intensive interaction for children whose communication is at an early stage. These relaxed and playful sessions follow the child's lead, helping them enjoy communication, understand non-verbal and verbal cues, and build emotional connections.

Signing Systems

At Cedars School, sign systems like Signalong are used alongside speech to aid understanding. Most children use signs and gestures along with speech, while some rely solely on non-verbal methods. Signalong incorporates speech, sign, gesture, facial expression, and voice tone, supporting the development of spoken language.

Visual Supports: Objects, Pictures, and Symbols

We use objects, photographs, and pictures throughout the school to support understanding and communication. These visual aids are used for daily schedules, activity choices, and expressing needs and ideas. This ensures that all students can participate fully in their learning experiences.

PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)

PECS is used to help children with little or no spoken communication abilities. Children learn to exchange pictures or symbols for desired items, initiating communication effectively.

High Tech Communication Aids / Assistive Technology

Some children benefit from using iPads or other devices as communication aids, assessed by our Speech and Language Therapist. Simple switches and other assistive technologies are also used to support communication and participation in activities.

Language Level

We tailor our language, signs, or symbols to each pupil’s needs, ensuring they have adequate time to process and respond. This individualized approach supports better understanding and participation.

Written Word

Some pupils at Cedars communicate through writing or typing, allowing them to express their needs and ideas effectively.

"At Cedars School, we believe in the power of Total Communication to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. By embracing diverse communication methods, we ensure that all students can express themselves, participate fully in their education, and build meaningful relationships. This approach not only supports academic success but also contributes to our positive and inclusive school culture."
